5 Big Reasons to Bring Grandparents on Your Disney Vacation

We are only half joking when we say we will never vacation when the children outnumber the adults. When it comes to evening the odds, having our parents with us on our vacation brings an extra layer of magic. Nothing compares to the experience of 3 generations all together on vacation. It’s even better when we go to one of our favorite places, Walt Disney World in Florida.

Here are 5 big reasons why you should take the grandparents with you on your next Walt Disney World Vacation.

  1. It takes a village.

I heard this phrase growing up but it never really rang true for me until I had my own children. There are times that my husband and I both have responsibilities we can’t reschedule and our children need to be at an event or practice.  It’s great that one of our parents is always there to help out and make sure our daughter, Olivia, makes it to singing lessons or to robotics practice.

Our parents are an integral part of our lives and our children’s development.  So why wouldn’t we want them to be there to enjoy family vacation time too?

Grandparents experience Walt Disney World with their grandchildren differently than we do as parents.  I remember when my mom saw Olivia run into Belle’s arms for the first time. My mom recalled the stories of me playing with my dolls as a child and shared them with my daughter.  Connections and new bonds are formed as stories and experiences are shared.

  1. Family Pictures

My dad has always been the one in the background reminding us to take pictures when we are all together.  I never realized that I was the one always taking the pictures but never in any of them until I saw that there were no pictures of me and my daughter together on my first Mother’s Day.

Enter Disney’s Memory Maker.  We make sure to purchase this service for every Disney vacation. Disney’s Memory Maker allows you unlimited digital downloads of all of your Disney PhotoPass family photos and videos.

Grandma wants a picture of everyone in front of Cinderella’s Castle?  A Disney’s Photopass Photographer will capture that.

Grandma wants a picture with all of her granddaughters and Ariel?  They will capture that too.

Grandma wants a picture of her alone with Gaston?  We’ll have to ask Grandpa first (but they’ll capture it too).

  1. Space to Spread Out

At this point you are reading this, you may be realizing that you are going to be on vacation with your children and their grandparents for a week.  That is a lot of time together.  You know you love them, but do you really want to be together all day every day for a week?

This is yet another reason why Walt Disney World makes a perfect multigenerational vacation.  There is so much to do and you don’t have to do it all together.  When you stay at a Walt Disney World Resort, the transportation to and from the parks is free and convenient.

When our son, Avery, is ready for a nap, my husband, Chris, and he hop on the monorail to go back to our room.  Olivia and I head over to Fantasyland to ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and do a little shopping.  Grandma and Grandpa take the monorail over to EPCOT to take a Flower and Garden Tour.  Later, everyone meets back up at Chef Mickey’s for dinner with the main mouse and share stories about their afternoon adventures before heading over to watch the fireworks together.

  1. Unconnected Time

Families today are very scheduled and very connected.  We have an online calendar where we enter events and appointments for the children so we can keep track of everyone’s busy schedule.  Even though we have a family dinner night every week with my husband’s parents and family, even that is still cluttered with homework, work issues and upcoming events.

Our Disney Vacation together gives everyone a chance to disconnect so they can reconnect without all of the distractions.  While standing in line for Soaring, Grandpa can tell stories of how he lived all over the US with his dad because they were a military family.  When we’re exploring Animal Kingdom, Olivia can tell Grandma about what she learned about gorillas from her school project.  And most importantly, everyone can just be together and enjoy our time as a family without worries about what is due the next day or the next meeting we need to attend.

  1. Magical Memories

When I was pregnant with my daughter, everyone told me that time was going to fly by.  It’s true. I blinked and Olivia is 11.   There is so much we have shared, but there is a lot more I want to experience with her and teach her.

Life gets busy. We all get stressed. Some days, extra stress is added when a phone call turns into bad news. Thankfully our family has something that helps gets us through.  We rely on our Disney vacation memories to brighten those days that seem a little too difficult.  My 4-year-old son, Avery, will tell us all about Dumbo and how he flew it all by himself.  My daughter will tell the story of how the chef in Cinderella’s Castle came to our table and asked her if she “could have anything to eat, what would it be?”  (Since she had a peanut allergy, he made her favorite grilled cheese sandwich even though it wasn’t on the menu.)  My mom will tell the story of Olivia, her and me all having afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian.  These are the magical memories that help bring us together and keep us together.

Yacht and Beach Club Pool

People may steer away from traveling to Disney World in the summer. There are many good reasons to go in the summer though.

1. Longer hours. You can utilize early hours and evening later hours when it is cooler

2. PLAN. You can pre-select fast passes ahead of time (60 days for those staying on property and 30 days for anyone else). Use these to stand in less lines and on more attractions. I don’t usually suggest holding off using fast passes for later in the day because then you cannot add any at the parks but in the summer months, it makes sense. If you can get to the parks when they open, you can easily ride five to seven attractions that are high crowd attractors, before the bulk of the crowds get in. Most guests do not arrive before 10:30AM. Don’t do the ones you have pre-selected fast passes for unless you have time or want to ride it multiple times. Pre-select three rides later in the day (evening) for ones that are high attractors. You can then do some shows late morning before it really heats up, have lunch at the park or head back then and enjoy the pool and the other offerings at the resorts.

3. Having a sit down meal for lunch during hot days is a nice break. Eat at a grab n go (quick service) for dinner to spend more time at the pool and get in the park when it cools down.

4. There are less ride refurbishments. Most things tend to be open.

5. If you can travel the second week in August and beyond, the crowds will be even less. The kids are either back to school or back in their towns for fall sports practices.

6. It is great time to visit the water parks as part of your vacation and we are giving free water park tickets with most packages for the summer months.

7. Up to 30% off resort stays this summer and we can package it with tickets and dining plans.

8. There are still plenty of character dining options available. I did a quick search in mid-July and there are character breakfast reservations for Be Our guest, Princess meals, breakfast with Mickey and friends, etc.!

9. Kids will not miss school and the pools at the resorts are a kid’s dream!

10. Most of all, have a plan. Work with someone who does this as their specialty or do it on your own if that is the type of thing you like to do. Have a plan regardless; meal reservations, fast passes, park flow. This will make a trip in the summer, fall, winter, or spring so much more relaxing.

I know there is a lot of confusion on the new 2014/2015 military discounts so I thought I would clarify some of it. Below is the actual discount and blackout dates. Then I will go into some of the answers to questions we get often.

2014-2015 Military Ticket Discount Salute Offer

The Disney Armed Forces Salute offers special military tickets. These tickets are for a specified number of days* and come in several varieties.

Qualified individuals may purchase up to a maximum of six** theme park tickets during the period of the Disney Armed Forces Salute. These tickets are non-refundable and any days left on the tickets will expire at the end of the offer period.

Tickets purchased at military resellers and not direct from Disney must be activated prior to first use in person by the military member or spouse***.

At Disney World you have three choices for your tickets.
• Disney 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets with Park Hopper Option for $177 each, plus tax.
• Disney 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets with Water Park Fun and More Option for $177 each, plus tax.
• Disney 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets with Park Hopper and Water Park Fun and More Options for $207 each, plus tax.
Walt Disney World Resort tickets may be used September 28, 2014, through October 3, 2015, except that the tickets may not be used December 22, 2014 – January 2, 2015 and March 29 – April 9, 2015.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by October 3, 2015.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can also take advantage of specially priced rooms at select Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort hotels.* This offer is valid for stays most nights from September 28, 2014, through October 3, 2015, except for:

November 27 – November 29, 2014
December 24 – December 31, 2014
March 30 – April 4, 2015

Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.

“Eligible Service Members” are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.

Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.

Disney 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Walt Disney World Resort are not valid until activated by the Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) at Walt Disney World theme park ticket windows. Tickets and options expire and may not be used after October 3, 2015. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.

Disney 3-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after October 3, 2015. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.

No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). In addition, one of the six (6) Tickets purchased must be used by the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse.
Each Disney Military Promotional Ticket must be used by the same person on any and all days.

*The number of rooms allocated for this offer is limited. Minimum length of stay requirements may apply. Valid Military ID will be required upon check-in, and military member (or spouse) must stay in the room. No group rates or other discounts apply. Advance reservations required. Additional per-adult charges apply at the Walt Disney World Resort if there are more than two adults per room. Other restrictions apply.

Answers to some of the more popular questions we get

  • You cannot stack discounts so you cannot get the Free dining promotion and the military discount. You need to choose. Sometimes based off the length of your stay and the ages of those traveling, the free dine might actually be a better option so always run the numbers or work with someone that can.
  • If you are staying 2-5 days, it is best to use the military salute tickets and either not use some days if you are staying shorter or add a one day park ticket.
    • If you want to do five day tickets, it would be $177 plus a one day base ticket=$279
A five day straight up ticket at Shades of Green with no hopping would be $300, $359 if you had the hopper feature
    • There are other options with the military discount like a six day ticket that tis NOT a Salute ticket but has a military discount is $307 for a base tickets, $365 if you added the hopper feature. If you did he salute tickets of $177 and added a two day base ticket, it would be $371 per person.
These prices were based off adults pricing (over the age of 9)
  • You need to have tickets attached to your mydisneyexperience account to get your fast passes ahead of time. You can do this by linking the ticket with the number on voucher. Contrary to what has been said, this works. You will need to get these tickets either at a base or by contacting Camp Pendleton and having them shipped. The information is below. You can fast pass 60 days ahead if you are staying on property and the tickets are linked or 30 days ahead if off property and linked. Off property is Shades of Green. You do not have 60 day Fast pass privileges staying at Shades of Green.
  • Camp Pendelton, Oceanside, CA. The Camp Pendleton ITT , the closest military base to Disneyland, can take your order over the phone and mail them to you.
    • They carry all varieties of Disneyland and Disney World tickets both Armed Forces Salute and Regular Military Discounted tickets.
    • There is a $10 FedEx fee.
    • Disney World tickets require a 2 week lead time.
    • Contact the Camp Pendleton ITT Pacific Plaza
      (760) 725-5863
      Mon-Sat: 8:30am-6:30pm
  • You only get six tickets per military member. They are not six for the military member and six for the spouse.
    • You cannot purchase and activate six and use more than one for the same person until the first ticket is used. For example, you cannot purchase and activate 6 for two people that just want to use all of them for a longer stay. You need to use the first one and then go back and activate the next ones.
  • Do not buy the new tickets until they come out.
  • If you have resort accommodations already booked and want to adjust it to the new military promotion, there needs to currently be inventory at that resort and room category. For example, if you have a room at the Contemporary in a Bay lake view but there aren’t any rooms left in their inventory when the new discount comes out, they will not adjust it. You can upgrade to a nicer room or move to another resort. This can be done without rebooking.
  • The discount on the rooms is not off the rates you see online or any current promotion you already have. The discount is off a brochure rate, no one sees online.
Each military member can book up to three rooms on the military rate including theirs. Everyone can pay with their own forms of payment. The quick service, regular, and deluxe dining plans can be added to the room for a package.

Disney has just released new Military Discounts for both rooms and tickets. Once again, this is a great opportunity for those of us with a military member in our family to take advantage of this deal and head to Disney. I price these trips day in and day out and I pride myself on giving people the options that will provide them the best possible value. This, of course, is different for each family. A question we get a lot from our clients is “Isn’t it less expensive to stay at the military resort, Shades of Green?” There are a lot of factors that go into answering this question, and because we look at each family individually, we often find a different answer based on their individual needs.

The Walt Disney World Military resort discount

 Offer Details*
•Deluxe and Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts – 40% resort discount
•Moderate Resorts and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Cabins – 35% resort discount
•Value Resorts – 30% resort discount
Disney’s Fort Wilderness campsites excluded

•Army   •Air Force   •Navy   •Marines   •Coast Guard   •National Guard

*Blackout dates of 11/24-11/26/10, 12/26-12/31/10, 4/17/10-4/20/11 apply. All discounts are subject to availability, certain restrictions apply.

A valid Active Duty / Spouse US Military ID will be required at resort check-in to receive the discount.

The Quick Service Dining Plan, Disney Dining Plan, or Disney Deluxe Dining Plan can also be added to make this a complete package.

•The great thing about this offer is it can be combined with the dining plan. (This cannot be done if you are staying at Shades of Green.) We have a breakdown of savings for the dining plan below. Bottom line: the dining plan is not a necessity, but if you will be eating on property, it is a great option.

•Another perk with the military discount is transportation is complimentary to and from the airport. This is not the case with Shades of Green. If you are staying there, add another cost (typically $120) for transportation. If you are driving in, Shades also charges for parking, whereas Disney does not.

Don’t get me wrong, Shades of Green can be a great option and I have stayed there several times. But when Disney is offering a 40% discount on a Deluxe and 35% on a moderate, this is the time to take advantage of these prices. Stay at Shades of Green when discounts like this are not available. *There is one exception to this. If you are an annual pass holder, there are higher discounts than the military rate during some seasons of the year. For example, some deluxe properties are offering discounts of 45% vs. 40%. This is a numbers game where someone who knows Disney inside and out needs to run the numbers to make sure you are looking at all your options accurately. In some cases, the difference may mean a savings of $100’s of dollars.

The Walt Disney World Military Ticket discount

(Disney offers a regular military discount 365 days a year; however, this special discount (‘Salute’ to military members) is even better!)*

This new discount is a great deal if you are staying for four days, or even up to five days. For five days, you can use the four day hopper and add a one day base ticket to make the total $223 per adult and $214 per child. However, for longer stays, the regular military discounted ticket is a better deal. A ‘Salute’ ticket at $138 plus a two day base ticket would be $306 total, whereas a six day hopper ticket with the regular military discount is only $291. (A child’s would be $289 vs. $267).

So with anything above five days in tickets, you are better off buying the regular military discounted hopper tickets. And if you buy base tickets instead of hoppers, you will save even more! You can still take advantage of the military discounted rooms plus dining. Confused yet? We help all our clients who book their rooms and dining packages figure out the best tickets to purchase.

The 50,000-square-foot facility boasts air-conditioned rooms, “VIP” suites, and private outdoor yards for your pet. Summertime at Walt Disney World

Yes it is hot in the summer. Yes it may rain briefly in the afternoon but there are many reasons to go to Disney this summer. Last June we went and we found it less crowded than our trip in October. We believe it is because so many people have been told to go in October that this has become a peak time. October is actually one of our busier months for clients now. So yes it will be hot and there will be crowds but we can help you manage those things and with all the promos Disney has come out with, there are fewer off season times than in previous years.

1. Everything is open! Attractions are not closed for refurbishments.

2. Extended hours. You can actually budget better than during other times of the year; ask us how. No matter when you decide to visit Walt Disney World in Orlando, the fact is there are always going to be crowds, especially for the rides and shows. During off-peak times, Disney cuts back hours at the parks and may not have as many ride vehicles going. This allows them to reduce manning; however, wait times end up being nearly as long as they may be during the summer time. So by going when there are extended hours when all of the attractions are open and having a plan for when you travel, you will be able to enjoy more and have a more flexible vacation.

3. Break up the summer. We all start the summer refreshed, loving the pool, and spending time with friends, but soon it all comes to feel like another schedule. Break it up with a trip to Disney, either short or long. We can help you experience a little magic either way. You don’t HAVE to set an entire week aside for Mickey.

4. If you do have some extra time, Wizarding World of Harry Potter is now open at Universal Studios and Sea World is offering $5.00 tickets this summer for kids! Take a day-trip to one of these fun places.

5. New things to see this summer include a new parade and new fireworks. Not to mention a dance party at Hollywood Studios and Tower of Terror has mixed it up.

6. Major airlines pricing roundtrip air in June/July from:

Huntsville, $148          Boston, $192

JFK, $238                      St Louis, $174

Detroit, $169                Chicago, $193

Charlotte, $158           Houston, $276

Atlanta, $138               Washington DC, $155

*Low-cost carrier rates may be lower. Subject to availability. Pricing at time this was published.

7. Time to get together with family and friends. We find this time of year is the easiest time friends and family can all get time off to get together. Turn it into a family reunion. There are so many things for folks to do at Disney. If you have members in your party who say they don’t like the parks, there is always golf and fishing, or even the Richard Petty race car driving experience. There is something for everyone and the summer affords the time for most to gather together and enjoy one another. Not everyone has to sit around the house all day and do the same thing together. They can all go off and do their own thing at Disney and meet up at the end of the day.

8. Throw some fun and entertainment into your summer. When I was young, my parents use to drag me to boring museums in the summer with no thrill to them. Then we would head to Cedar Point for one day of fun each summer. Why not do it all in one trip? There is so much to do at Disney; it is 47 square miles, and it is both fun and educational. You can learn about recycling while playing a game (in the AC), build a rollercoaster while doing math (in the AC), see how they are growing the next generation of plants on a boat ride (in the AC), or fly over California in a hang glider on Soarin’ (in the AC). See a theme here?

9. Savings this summer. Prices as low as $860.88 for a family of four, two adults, two kids (between the ages of 3 and 9) for four nights and five day tickets. Kids stay and Play Free, Free dining, up to 40% off resort rooms, so many ways to save money!
